A brand new world speed record for production electric cars has been set by the Tesla Model S P85D, completing a standing quarter-mile sprint in 11.6 seconds.
The Tesla electric car accelerated from 0-60 mph in an astonishing 3.1 seconds and passed the finish line at 114.6 mph.
Most importantly, this was not just an impressive feat for an electric car. The P85D’s 0-60 time makes it the fastest accelerating four-door production car ever, despite weighing over two tonnes and offering a spacious 5-seat interior.
The world record, which was set at Palm Beach International Raceway and is officially recognised by the National Electric Drag Racing Association, beat the Tesla’s old time by 0.2 seconds.
The Tesla Model S P85D was unveiled towards the end of last year and has built upon the successful Model S. It offers autonomous driving features and dual motors to give it that extra boost in power.
In the video below (starting at 1:19), the Model S P85D is seen to comfortably beat a 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat on the way to setting the new world electric car speed record.
