BMW has presented the Concept iX3 at the Beijing Auto Show, with the model previewing an all-electric version of the X3 SUV already confirmed for production.
The Concept iX3 previews BMW’s fifth-generation of electric eDrive technology, with one of the key benefits being the grouping together of motor, transmission, and electronics into a new, seperate component.
Larger capacity batteries are also included, and the next-gen eDrive system improves performance and range thanks to reductions in weight and improvement in packaging space and flexibility. BMW has confirmed that the new eDrive system will make its debut in the production iX3.
This is partly possible because the iX3 sits on BMW’s new vehicle architecture, which allows for flexibility to be produced as front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive. It has also been designed to allow internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrid powertrains, or pure-electric systems to be integrated into any model.
The Concept iX3 produces more than 200 kW (270 hp), with a driving range of 249 miles according to the WLTP driving cycle, thanks to a battery with a net capacity of more than 70 kWh. The Concept iX3 also allows for ultra-rapid charging at up to 150 kW.
It is unlikely that the production iX3 will differ from the concept model in terms of electric drive technology, so expect the BMW iX3 to rival the new Jaguar I-Pace and forthcoming Audi e-tron in terms of performance, range, and cost when it goes on sale next year.
